Nedumangad Residence
Project Overview
Client: Shibu Surendran
Location: Vattappara, Trivandrum
Project Type: Residential Renovation & Extension
Scope: Exterior redesign, spatial enhancement, architectural detailing, landscape integration
This project involved the complete transformation of an old, modest residential structure into a contemporary home while respecting and elevating its original character.
The Existing Structure
The original house was structurally simple and dated in appearance, with limited architectural articulation. While the building lacked visual depth, it featured one element with strong potential — a set of arched windows, which reflected a traditional character uncommon in newer constructions.
Most renovation approaches would have eliminated this feature. Instead, we saw it as an opportunity.
Design Intent
Our goal was not to erase the past, but to reinterpret it. The design approach focused on:
Retaining and celebrating the arched windows as a defining architectural identity
Modernising the façade without overpowering the original structure
Introducing new volumes that feel intentional, not attached
Creating additional lifestyle spaces while maintaining balance and proportion
Key Design Challenges
- Working with an Old, Simple Structure
The house had limited architectural layers and proportions, which made it challenging to introduce a modern language without appearing forced.
Solution:
We used clean horizontal and vertical lines, controlled projections, and layered finishes to create depth without altering the core structure.
- Convincing the Client to Retain the Arched Windows
The arched windows were initially seen as outdated.
Design Decision:
We strongly recommended retaining them and redesigning the surrounding façade to frame and elevate the arches, turning them into a focal point rather than a compromise.
Outcome:
The arches are now one of the most striking features of the house — a unique identity element in an otherwise modern exterior.
- Integrating a New Extension Seamlessly
A new one-bedroom extension was added on the left side of the house, along with an outdoor patio and jacuzzi space.
Solution:
The extension was designed as a natural continuation of the existing structure using:
- Matching proportions
- Complementary materials
- A consistent design language
This ensured the new addition felt intentional rather than appended.

Client Experience & Results
The client initially approached the project with a focus on modernization alone. Through the design process, they embraced a more thoughtful transformation — one that balanced emotion, memory, and modern living.
What began as a simple renovation evolved into a home with a distinct architectural identity, standing out in its neighbourhood while remaining rooted in its original character.
Why This Project Matters
This project represents Turtle Vine Interiors’ design philosophy:
Good design doesn’t erase history — it elevates it.
By preserving key architectural elements and pairing them with contemporary design, we created a home that feels timeless, personal, and intentional.
